Workplace Health & Safety Policy

1. Purpose
This policy outlines KangaByte Computer Repair's commitment to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all employees, contractors, and visitors. It establishes guidelines to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic) and relevant Australian Standards.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all employees, contractors, subcontractors, and visitors while on KangaByte premises, including:
- The main workshop and repair bench area
- Retail front counter and customer waiting area
- Server room and storage areas
- Office and break room
- Loading dock and delivery areas
3. General Responsibilities
Management must:
- Provide and maintain a safe working environment
- Ensure adequate training is provided for all staff
- Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits
- Provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Investigate all incidents and implement corrective actions
All employees must:
- Follow all safety procedures and use PPE as required
- Report hazards, near-misses, and injuries immediately
- Not operate equipment without proper training
- Maintain a clean and tidy workspace
- Know the location of fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits
4. Workshop Safety — ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) Procedures
- All technicians must wear an ESD wrist strap when working on internal components
- ESD mats must be used on all workbenches when handling motherboards, RAM, GPUs, and other sensitive components
- Components must be stored in anti-static bags when not in use
- Do not wear wool or synthetic clothing that generates static — cotton clothing is preferred
- ESD equipment must be inspected monthly and replaced if damaged
5. Chemical Handling & Hazardous Materials
The workshop uses various chemicals including:

All Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are maintained in the blue binder at the workshop entrance and digitally on the shared drive (S:\Safety\SDS\).
6. Manual Handling
- Desktops and monitors over 15kg must be lifted using proper technique (bend knees, straight back)
- Request assistance for items over 20kg — do not lift alone
- Use the trolley for moving multiple items between areas
- Server rack equipment must be installed by two people minimum
- Report any strain or discomfort immediately
7. Electrical Safety
- Inspect all power tools and cables before use
- Do not use equipment with damaged cables — report to IT immediately
- Use RCD-protected outlets for all test benches
- Never work on live electrical equipment
- Unplug equipment before opening cases
- Keep liquids away from all workbenches and electronic equipment
8. Fire Safety
- Know the location of all fire extinguishers (mapped on the safety board)
- Fire extinguisher types: CO2 (electrical), Dry Chemical (general), Foam (paper/wood)
- Do not block fire exits or extinguisher access
- Report any fire alarms or activated extinguishers immediately
- Evacuation assembly point: Car Park B, near the flag pole
- Fire warden: Diane Kowalski (backup: Marcus Chen)
9. Incident Reporting
All incidents, no matter how minor, must be reported:
- Ensure the injured person receives first aid immediately
- Complete an Incident Report Form (available at the front desk)
- Notify the store manager (Ben Wallace) within 1 hour
- For serious incidents, call 000 first, then notify management
- The incident will be investigated within 48 hours
